The Three Stages of Compost
I love my compost station (see how I’ve elevated its importance with a slight name change? So much nicer than ‘bin’). It was one of the first things we did in the veg patch, for obvious reasons as its hard to grow a garden without decent soil and compost.
It is a cobble together of some old pallets, adorned with a few scraps of carpet and an old rug that was being thrown out by MiL. But I love it.
I even named the individual bays. Mainly because although the process is quite widely acknowledged it was taking a bit to explain to people why there were three bays and in which order they were to be used.
So bay one became Phil (aka fill this one), Bay two was Jonny Rotten (rot down) and bay three was Eustace (a bit feeble, but the closest I could think of to ‘Use This’)

Turning the compost in this way ensures it heats up and rots down quickly.
The Compost Spinner
This is one of those investments that I got swept away with (probably the compost enthusiasm again) but haven’t really gotten full benefit from.
There are obviously lots of fertilisers you can buy, and a decent liquid feed for tomatoes etc is a good idea. But they can add up, so how about making your own liquid feed, from a source that’s (hopefully) growing nearby?
